Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has to pay a fine of ₹12 lakh. This happened because Punjab Kings took much time to finish their overs when they played against Gujarat Titans at the New Chandigarh stadium in Mullanpur.
The people in charge did this because of something called Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct. This rule is, about when a team takes long to finish their overs.
This is the time Punjab Kings did this so Shreyas Iyer just has to pay the fine. If Punjab Kings does this again they will get in trouble. The rules say that the time a team does this the captain has to pay ₹12 lakh. If they do it again they will get a punishment.
The Punjab Kings had a problem with their over rate. This happened even though they started their campaign with a win. The Gujarat Titans scored 162 for 6 when they batted first. The Punjab Kings bowlers did a job of keeping the score under control. They bowled well in the middle part of the game. Yuzvendra Chahal and Vyshak Vijayakumar were very important in slowing down the Gujarat Titans.
The first part of the game took longer than it should have. The people in charge of the game said that the Punjab Kings did not start the 20th over on time. In T20 cricket they watch the time closely. If the game is slow it can affect how long the game is and when it is on television.
The Punjab Kings also had a time when they batted. They lost some players early.. Cooper Connolly from Australia played a big role. He scored 72 runs. Was not out. He helped the Punjab Kings win the game by playing smart and calm. The Punjab Kings won the game in 19.1 overs. They got two points from their game. The Punjab Kings were happy, with their win.
For Shreyas Iyer the fine does not affect his playing status. It is a reminder that the IPL is being strict with match timings this season. Captains have been in trouble before for taking long between overs especially when there are bowling changes, injuries and discussions.
The IPL wants to keep the game moving because delayed matches affect TV schedules and player workload. Teams need to make bowling changes while still being tactical.
Punjab Kings will also know that if they do it again they will have to pay later in the season. According to IPL rules a second offence can mean a fine. Repeated offences may also mean that they can only have four fielders outside the circle in the few overs.
Even though Punjab won their match the fine for taking too long between overs shows an area that the team needs to improve right away. They have a schedule ahead.
For Gujarat Titans the loss was disappointing. They scored a good total. The match showed how quickly things can change in T20 cricket if the middle order does not build on a start.
Punjab Kings are feeling good after their win. The captain and coaches will focus on managing overs better in upcoming matches. This is especially important, against batting teams where every minute counts.
